BSBF hosted visit to ESRF & ILL - Monday 4 May
BSBF2026 invites company representatives to a BSBF hosted visit to the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, where world-leading photon and neutron science drive innovation across materials research, energy, engineering and advanced technologies.
The programme combines a visit to ESRF in the morning and ILL in the afternoon. Please note that early registration for the combined ESRF and ILL visit is mandatory. Further details on registration deadlines can be found below.
European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF)
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble is one of the world’s leading synchrotron light sources. It provides highly intense and stable X-ray beams that enable scientists and industry to investigate the structure and properties of matter at atomic and molecular scales.
Following the successful completion of the Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) upgrade, ESRF now operates the most powerful high-energy synchrotron worldwide. This upgrade has significantly enhanced beam quality, opening new opportunities in areas such as advanced materials, energy storage, engineering, environmental science and medical research.
ESRF serves a large international user community from both academia and industry. Industrial collaboration is an integral part of the facility’s mission, through scientific partnerships as well as the procurement of advanced technologies required to operate and continuously upgrade its accelerator complex and beamlines.
Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL)
The ILL is a world leader in neutron science and technology. Its high-flux reactor delivers the most intense neutron beams to the largest instrument suite in the world, serving a large community of researchers – both academic and industrial. Neutrons are a unique and powerful probe of materials and processes. ILL' s suite of over 40 state-of-the-art instruments, complemented by a comprehensive suite of labs and scientific support services, enables cutting-edge research across a wide range of scientific domains, including physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. Working closely with industry, the ILL develops an impactful program addressing societal challenges in key areas such as health, energy, the environment, quantum materials and information technologies.
The ILL hosts researchers mainly from its 13 stakeholder countries in Europe, with 10% coming from about 30 other countries. In total, there are about 2500 researcher visits each year. ILL also funds and hosts PhD students and is involved in numerous European programmes for science, innovation and advanced training. The ILL plays a central role in the ecosystem of European research facilities and is a Landmark Facility on the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap.

Practical information & registration
Participation is strictly limited to 48 participants and subject to approval. Early registration is therefore strongly recommended.
For safety reasons, high-heeled shoes are not permitted, and pregnant participants are unable to attend the ESRF visit. For the ILL visit, participants with pacemakers may access the site but are not permitted to enter the Experimental Hall.
Due to stricter security requirements at ILL, registration for the ILL visit will close two weeks earlier than registration for ESRF. Participants registering after the ILL deadline will only be able to attend the ESRF visit in the morning. Please note that check-in and attendance verification are managed onsite accordingly.
Registration deadlines
- Combined visit to ESRF & ILL: Thursday 2 April 2026
- ESRF visit only: Thursday 16 April 2026
