BSBF hosted visit to GSI-FAIR
Monday 7 September 2026
At the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, the boundaries of science and technology are pushed daily. Together, GSI and FAIR represent one of the world’s most advanced research infrastructures, dedicated to exploring the fundamental structure of matter and the evolution of the universe — from the building blocks of atoms to the origins of the cosmos.
FAIR is currently in an intensive phase of construction and installation. Once completed, it will extend GSI’s existing accelerator complex with a new international accelerator facility—a system of superconducting magnets, ultra-high vacuum systems, high-power targets, cryogenics, and precision detection technologies.
This vast scientific infrastructure is built through close cooperation with industry. FAIR’s success depends on advanced engineering, manufacturing excellence, and reliable technology partners who can deliver solutions for demanding environments and long-term operation, as well as on companies with experience in industrial installations, maintenance, logistics, or system integration.
Opportunities for Industrial Partners
FAIR provides a steady flow of procurement opportunities and long-term collaborations across diverse technological areas, including:
- Mechanical and cryogenic systems
Design, fabrication, and installation of precision mechanical structures, cryostats, and cooling systems. - Vacuum and ultra-high vacuum technology
Expertise in vacuum chambers, leak testing, pumping systems, and surface treatment. - Electrical and power systems
High-voltage and low-voltage systems, control cabinets, and energy distribution solutions. - Instrumentation and control
Advanced sensors, data acquisition systems, and automation solutions for experimental setups. - Civil engineering and facility management
Construction, installation, and maintenance of infrastructure for high-tech environments. - Precision manufacturing
High-tolerance components, machining of special materials, and assembly of complex systems.
Programme*
Monday 7 September 2026
09:00 – Welcome session including presentations by GSI - FAIR, followed by an introduction to BSBF2026.
Mandatory safety instructions for the visit to the FAIR construction site will be provided.
10:00 – Guided tour of the GSI campus, including selected FAIR testing and preparation facilities.
11:30 – Lunch
12:30 – Collection of required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, helmet and high-visibility vest is mandatory.
13:00 – Guided visit of the FAIR Construction Site, highlighting the scale, progress and technical complexity of the facility.
15:00 – Return from the Construction Site / End of Visit
* Please note that the above programme is subject to minor changes due to operational or safety-related requirements.
FAIR has recently completed a major round of procurements, with the next phase not expected for a few years. In the meantime, installation of the components already procured is well under way.
Practical information & registration
Participation is strictly limited to 50 participants (tours will be organised in groups of up to 25) and subject to approval. Early registration is therefore strongly recommended.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided, and clothing restrictions apply.
Registration deadline: 23 August 2026
How to get there
Address:
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI FAIR)
Planckstraße 1
